Hi Nooper Troopers! As usual, I have listed the first batch of reviews and articles regarding Anoop’s performance of “Ooh Baby Baby” on Motown Night. He definitely ‘crooned and swooned’ America tonight! Here are the articles:
Can we all take a moment to imagine how transcendentally cool (and nerve-wracking) it would be to sing “Ooo Baby Baby” for Smokey Robinson? And listening to Smokey talk about the song’s almost accidental genesis — it was spawned from a vocal riff onstage, he says — is fascinating.
Anoop’s version brings back that Smokey enthusiasm. “It’s a sensual, sentimental song. And I always feel it. And I felt it so much when Anoop sang it,” he says. “He blew me away just singing it.”
And what a performance he gives us live. His vocals are masterfully controlled, his timing is spot-on, and there’s an emotional connection to the song that pours forth as he sings. This is Anoop’s best performance yet. He absolutely nails it.
One knit to pick: All of Anoop’s performances that I can remember have been straight-ahead renditions, much like this one. I’d really like to see him make a song his own rather than hew so strictly to the original performer’s vision. He’s got the voice, the presence and the fan base. He should take a chance.
“That has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written and probably one of the hardest songs to sing, because it goes from being in your chest to your head,” Kara says. “Overall, I can tell you that was very hard to do, and I think you did a pretty good job. … You can sing.”
“You have a newfound confidence, but I want to see more confidence,” Paula says. “Your phrasing, your delivery and your falsetto, for the most part, is not only spot-on, it’s sweet.”
“It was a great vocal,” Simon says. “I think you looked as if you were half asleep, though, throughout the song. … It was a little bit like somebody singing it within a musical.”
“What I would do next week, turn it back up, baby, give me that energy,” Randy says. “It was nice to hear you croon and swoon.”
Anoop went for another slow burner to prove he can really sing, and proved he did–again. He owned last week and this week was no different. He effortlessly floated from his falsetto to full voice as he cruised the stage. The judges were a bit too critical pointing out the very few pitchy moments. Pah! I thought it was flawless. The judges also want to see his personality back. That, I can agree with. I loved his upbeat performances but it didn’t show his great voice. I love the slowed down performances, but they don’t show his personality. Next week (and he will be there next week or the riot starts at 5pm EST Friday. March 27) he promises to bring the vocals and the personality. Awes!

Anoop Desai [and Kris Allen] continued to turn in solid acts, continuing the male dominance of this season.
Anoop Desai is going with “Ooh Baby Baby.” Smokey told him the story of how the song was created during their rehearsal, which Anoop says was amazing. When he first starts, I feel like maybe he’s a little too high for his range’s comfort. During the middle part, he sounds great, but during the end chorus, it sounds a little uncomfortable again. But he sells the heck out of it. Kara says it’s a tough song because it goes from your chest to your head in terms of how you sing it and that he had some great moments, and some not so great, but overall, she was impressed. Paula compliments his phrasing, delivery and falsetto. Simon says it was a great vocal but that he looked half-asleep instead of the serious look he was going for. Randy says next week he needs to turn it back up and bring the good vocals too, and put it all together.

Anoop Desai sang Smokey Robinson’s “Oooo Baby Baby.”
Not sure I like having a second slow song in a row from Anoop, but … it was fine. I kept waiting for it to kick in a little bit at some point, and it never did.
A second straight week of crooning can get old — I hope he gets more rockin’ next week.
Whoah, Anoop sounds great in rehearsal, Smokey says he wouldn’t change a thing, that was great. Anoop liked getting to sing the song to the writer.
Anoop starts out sitting on the edge of the stage, in jeans and some jacket with knit sleeves. He’s really working the song, stretching it out; I don’t know, I usually like him but it feels a bit wimpish for me. Nice, pure tone though; just wavering on that line between emotional and affected. Also not a lot of energy in the song; definitely not my favorite from Anoop.
Well, isn’t Anoop-Dogg Mr. Come-Hither, these days? The fan favorite’s take on the Miracles‘ “Ooo Baby Baby” was a little low on outward energy, but he apparently was saving all his oomph to hit those sweet falsetto notes and keep the wide-ranging love song under control. Sure enough, Simon complained that Anoop seemed half asleep during the performance, but he agreed that it was a great vocal.
Anoop Desai takes what might be the biggest risk so far of his Idol run: Smokey Robinson and the Miracles’ Ooo Baby Baby. I’m not sure it’s the most dynamic performance we’ve seen so far, but it’s much better than I would’ve predicted for him just two weeks ago. Quality-wise it’s much closer to Always on My Mind than Beat It, and, while’s his falsetto’s not perfect, his runs are exquisite. All in all, a solid performance that will easily keep him around.
Kara notes how hard the song it is to sing and that he did a pretty good job (that’s actually higher praise, given that song, than it sounds like it is). She adds that he’s going to need to show more skill changing up the melodies to continue progressing through the competition. Paula wants to see more comfidence, but she loves his phrasing and his feeling. Simon says it was a great vocal but that Anoop looked like he was half asleep: “You’ve had two good weeks in a row now. You’re up there.” Randy says that next week, he should turn it back and give them energy with great vocals: “Bring it on! Get the party on!”
Speaking with Ryan, Randy says this season’s competition is shaping up to be a duel to the finish between the guys. Ryan then asks Anoop if he thinks he can win. Anoop’s reply: “You shouldn’t be here if you don’t want to win it.”
Here is also an article by Examiner.com on Anoop’s fashion style for tonight’s performance
I am still singing “Ooh Baby Baby” because of Anoop Desai. His rendition was very smooth and relaxed - maybe too relaxed. As for his outfit…it looks like a letterman’s jacket from a high school production of Grease layered with too many pieces. It seems like he likes the whole layered look, but considering his height, he should go less bulky and more streamlined and tailored.

LOL.. thanks Alexis and Lia.. I did this last week, and thats when Steph decided to name me a contributor =)
I’ll be searching for more tomorrow =)
just finished watching anoop’s vid tonight.
i noticed paula saying to anoop’s that he’s not yet a legend. anoop answered back that legends are evrywhere.
paula’s loose brain head did not get what anoop’s trying to convey on saying that phrase.
@GIE: i wasnt home to watch the entire episode.. i watched Anoop’s performance but didnt see it there.. when did that happen?? I’m about to go to sleep so ill watch the entire vid tomorrow..
Wait… She was saying that to Simon.. Cause she was pointing in his direction..
OHHH.. THAT I REMEMBER!! Yes.. @GIE: They were talking about The Motown Legends on the studio that time.. and Simon i think says “THERE’S ALWAYS BEEN A LEGEND IN THIS SHOW” and Paula Says HE IS NOT.. and they get into small bickering.. Anoop was 100% not in that conversation.. I would hate them if they went that far to Anoop.. =)
ANYONE KNOW NEXT WEEK’S THEME??? Im gonna head to bed, so i hope ill find out by tomorrow =).. Nyt everyone!!
Snickers, OUT!! (lol)
ROCK SONG THEME WEEK
Seriously? Or is that what you want it to be?!?
based on IDF spoiler!!! I hope anoop can give us a mindblowing performance but i love him to do his rendtion of “angel” by aerosmith…
ill watch it again…..don’t want anoop to be in a hot water again with those judges….
yah,you’re all right!sowee!!!
its simon’s who said that phrase, maybe i’m just too affected on anoop’s emotions…..
and don’t want those judges to say something bad about our anoopy!!
let’s pray over ! because tomorrow is another judgement day…..
On one of the thread I wrote I wish he’d picked other song that showcases his voice quality more.
I listened the mp3 over and over, and now I take back my words! This showcases the ’sensuality’ of his voice (woooohooo) and his falsetto is great.
Now time to watch AI to se his full performance.
he was BE-YOUU-TEEE-FULL tonight! it was really good! and those high notes!
he’s amazing at romantic and slow songs, but i actually do agree that he shud sing something faster and more upbeat next time!
I LOVE ANOOP!
I agree with the Examiner article - I did not like Anoop’s clothes tonight :( He sounded great of course, but he needs a better stylist.
Agree, he’s like a cast of ‘Happy Days’ (Fonzie, anybody?). Want to see him in tux!
what he did is amazing but i want more.! haha:) im craving for more.!:)
oh wait.! did you notice his reaction… on the last part.! when ryan mentioned stevie wonder. haha:) anoop is fainting. haha. cute!
have you noticed that the judge’s comments on anoop performance last night is telling us that they are very sure that anoop is already going into the next few weeks..? (KARA: YOU CAN SING! PUSH IT MORE IN THE UPCOMING WEEKS, RANDY: NEXT WEEK, TURN IT UP AND GIVE US ENERGY, IT WAS NICE TO HEAR U SWOON, BRING IT ON NEXT WEEK ) though it sounds great for us anoop’s fans but let us not rely on these and be overconfident that our anoop will be extra safe tonight…so let’ s still vote HARD!!!!! the judges and the ai staff myt be deceiving us and fooling us around so we myt not vote hard this time.?? wat u think guys???
Honestly, I think Anoop in a suit would be superdelicious, and also yummy scrumboes!!! and if i had a cell phone and didnt live with my parents ( you know adolf and his wife? (just kiddin), I would so stay up all night vothing for Anoop, or are you only allowed to vote once? Doesn’t matter the point is that I LOVE ANOOP!
Well, most of these reviews praise Anoop’s vocals. And they should.
He sound amazing. I think he was nervous of singing the song in front of Smokey. But he did fine!
@Nickioli You can vote as many times as you can!! =D
I am just loving Anoop!! Even tho that was not an energetic performance - I LOVED it. I would pay to see Anoop do that for a couple of hours! Just relaxed and singing so beautifully! He doesn’t need any of the gimmicks! He is just so smooth!
Way to go Noop Dogg!!!!!!
Ha ha yeah! He can just kind of soothe the crowd with that beautiful voice! *sigh* <3 Can’t wait to go to his concerts!
I keep thinking that Anoop’s first choice would have been ‘Tracks of my Tears’, but he lost it out to Adam in a lottery (could that have happened when he pulled out the paper and Adam hugged him - was it the Behind the Scenes video).
i kinda had the same thought.. i knew the paper he was holding might have some meaning..BUT.. i think they draw the order of who chooses songs.. Anoop gets to go before Adam and possibly choose before him, so Adam FAKE punches him, and Anoop hugs him instead.. thats my take..
It’s not order.. Producers choose order.. It’s song choice.. I just watched 25 things you didn’t know about Idol on TVGN and it said when 2 of them want the same song they draw for it..
seriously??? hmmmm.. interesting.. i wish there was an “American Idol Tell All” or “American Idol Grand Reunion”.. LOL.. like most reality shows where they talked about what really happened behind the cameras..lol..
That’s sort of what that was… But I deleted it.. =( Sorry.. It was from 08..
I mean, you know, like modt reality shows, after the finale, they gather all finalists, have 1 or 2 hours of just talking about whats been happening. so that all of America and world will really know what goes on.. LOL.. but they wont do it.. AI might get caught with their rigging. lol
SO TRUE!! Ha ha! That would awesome though! More Anoop!! I know I’m usually on here all night but it’s storming here really bad and I’m pretty afraid of storms so talk to everyone tomorrow.. Oh and Snickers if you could do some research about next weeks theme that would be SWEET! And maybe post your findings?!? ;D I’m going to work on pics tomorrow!
Yeah, Simon and Paula’s childish bickering was ridiculous and rude. As for the “legends” comment, she was talking about Berry and Smokey in the audience, and Simon said something along the lines of “what about me?” and that’s when paula said ‘you’re not a legend…” and the childishness continues.
So yeah, nothing to do with Anoop.
He did so well last night, I’m still thinking about it….would have been better in a sharp suit or something instead of high school preppy…what are those stylists thinking?
Of course, Anoop would be hot if he wore a grocery bag….
I loved Anoop’s clip in the recap though. Why couldn’t he sing like that, with a smile and some kind of movement. He got the crowd to cheer for him too.
Yep, somebody should tell him personally that we want Anoop dancing and smiling with so much joy like that. Any confidant who could contact him?
I’m sure Anoop is out there to hear our requests! ;D
