A few statements have been made implying or outright accusing Simon and Randy of making racist comments toward Anoop:
“From Simon’s Racist remark at the American Idol Auditions To Randy’s “noop Brown dog†comment, Anoop is able to make a place in the hearts of audience and that’s what matters in the end. I believe we have an American Idol from Carolina this time.â€
“’Anoop Dog’ came in shorts and flip-flops. Simon Cowell had a bit of a racist remark that Anoop looked like he just came from a “meeting with Bill Gatesâ€. Not all people of Indian-decent work in Silicon Valley Simon.â€
Personally, I feel these comments have been misconstrued and are undeserving of being hyped as racist. Let’s take the first one – Simon’s remark during Hollywood week saying Anoop looked like “he just came from a meeting with Bill Gatesâ€.
Anoop was wearing typical Carolina Southern College Boy uniform with his clean-cut haircut and humble smile. His look basically screams “regular guyâ€. And grouped along with what Simon knows of him –- his barbecue thesis, grad student enrollment -– he knows Anoop is a smart guy. So when Simon’s usual sarcastic self pops out with a comparison to Bill Gates’ entourage, I’m thinking honestly maybe he’s not too far off! Anoop’s look is not edgy or current. It’s that same steady chinos, button-down shirt, and V-neck sweater that has served many men who have concerns other than being on the cutting edge of fashion. Someone who wears the same style shirt every week should be familiar with the concept!
So I ask those people that linked the comment somehow with Anoop’s Indian decent, what was said that made you think that? Is it because to you Bill Gates = Silicon Valley? I’m thinking it’s more like Bill Gates = King of the Nerds, which I believe is how Simon equates that college prep look.
Okay next one – Randy’s “Noop Brown Dog†comment. People who tagged this as racism just didn’t have their ears open. At least the local North Carolina newpaper, the News & Observer, got it right:
“Randy calls Anoop ‘Noop Brown Dog’ saying that he is like Bobby Brown’s cousin.“
It was merely a statement on Anoop’s soulful sound compared to Bobby Brown and that’s all, which anyone listening to the show would’ve heard Randy say towards the end of the judges’ comments to Anoop… a whole 30 seconds of paying attention.
Okay, so how hard was that? I think the media needs to relax a bit on jumping to conclusions for the sake of ratings, sales, or web hits. With the Thirteen getting ready to perform for the first time as a group this week, there’s certainly more engaging topics to report on – we want some REAL Anoop news!

That was some really good analysis CarolinaB. I hadn’t thought about Randy’s comment like that and now it makes sense. Thanks!
I still don’t know what to make of Simon’s comments. I mean how hard is it to pronounce ANOOP? Simon had to call him Anoop-y within 5 seconds of meeting him, that seemed more than a little disrespectful. As far as Randy’s comment, I never thought he meant anything other than a comparison to the actual Bobby Brown. In general though, I think there is a lack of understanding of Indian Americans, but that should change with more people like Anoop being in the public spotlight. OK…let’s move on now…
those comments defiantly aren’t racist.. but this one person on youtube defiantly has been racist.. .you don’t even want to know what they’ve said… also they’ve got facts mixed up cuz they thinks he’s Arabic….
Here’s my 2 cents:
As far as Randy’s comment, it certainly was not racist in anyway, given that he qualified his statement by saying “Bobby Brown’s cousin”. But what was amusing to me that night was that initially Anoop must have not understood himself, or must have been puzzled by, the nickname ‘Noop Brown Dog’ (his reaction shot was off-camera); it seemed that Randy had to explain himself saying “like Bobby Brown’s cousin”, and then Anoop said, “oh ok, Brown, I thought…. never mind”.
So if Anoop himself was confused by the comment initially, it’’s understandable that some others were as well. But labeling this as racism is an over-reaction.
I’m not so sure I can say the same thing about Simon’s comment. I don’t think he is racist, or his comment was overtly racist, but it just shows that all of us tend to stereotype people based on how they look, how they speak, etc.
>> Is it because to you Bill Gates = Silicon Valley? I’m thinking it’s more like Bill Gates = King of the Nerds, which I believe is how Simon equates that college prep look.
Simon himself said “Silicon [valley] hi-tech”, so there is no room for guessing or interpretation. He just gave in to his sub-conscious stereotype that someone of Indian descent is most probably a computer-geek, a la Bill Gates. And Anoop’s grad student, preppy look must have sub-consciously reinforced that stereotype.
But the bottom-line is racism is not something Anoop needs to worry about on Idol. There is always a tendency in the media to overreact. I mean, everyone battles stereotypes — even the other contestants on Idol have been put into cliched slots by the media and blogosphere: “blue-collar country hick”, “drama queen”, “exploiting family tragedy”, “exploiting disability”, “theatrical Broadway type”, “Mulan singing beauty-queen” etc., etc. Of course all these labels too are completely superficial, and do not speak to the true people behind those callow labels. So stereotypes are something everyone struggles. Anoop is a smart guy, and he knows not to let them get into his head — he will focus on the task at hand, which is being the best performer and singer he can be.
I don’t think they said anything racist. Although, I was a bit confused about Randy’s Noop Brown Dog. I didn’t get it the first time he said it. I didn’t know Bobby Brown originally sang that song.
as for randy he just want to say that noop dogg belongs to Snopp dogg a multimillion artist. if only there’s a royalty or copyright or whatever for that it would have been raised, but i think there’s none. but still it belongs to one great current living artist. i adore anoop but i feel for randy protecting his brothers name.. as for simon, american idol is a showbusiness, it has to have to have something every season. if its is boring ratings will go down the show will end. would you like that? american idol is something millions and millions of people anticipates in the beginning of the year, thanks to Simon for keeping the show interesting as one contestant said on an audition.. but to AI producers or whomever, stop playing with anoop, dont put him at the end okey. that’s cruel entertainment on your part, toying with ordinary talented people…you must have said the third time, that’s “priceless” looking at anoops reaction.. enough already and have pity for anoop.. lastly, anoop you melt everygirls heart with your voice hope you reach top 2…
@ Shree - It’s funny that you mention Anoop’s reaction to Randy’s comment, because I almost put something about it in the post. Anoop definitely had the reaction you described, which did prompt Randy to explain further so it would be understood he was referencing Bobby Brown. Which is why it puzzles me even more that it would be construed as racist - because on the live show Randy specifically addressed it to make sure it wasn’t taken the wrong way. However, everyone doesn’t always catch every word - case in point, you clarifying that Simon said he meant “high tech” in his comments during Hollywood week. That one I missed and probably would have made me think twice about that comment.
Also - struggling against stereotypes. I’ll go you one step further, I think the media (and sometimes the “mob” reaction of the population) puts these unique individuals within those stereotypical boxes because the mob is lazy. It’s easier to prepackage people than to truly try to know and understand the person, who they are, what motivates them, and really get into their shoes. I’ve also read many posts regarding Danny and his late wife - talks about her too much, on and on with the same story, etc. etc. Well, I wonder if it happened to me, what would I talk about? What would have motivated me to be on American Idol? How many things happen during the day that he says “I wish you were here to see this”? And should he lie when someone asks him what motivates him, just because some people are “tired” of hearing about it?
Ironic that here I am on my soapbox talking against judging people, on a show that’s all about judging people. Hmmm… maybe it’s ME that needs to chill!
as for simon’s comment,.. I think, bill gates=king of the nerds is what he is trying to emphasize,.. because he knew, from anoop’s application, he is a genius,..
as for randy’s,.. i think that comment means no harm,.. bobby brown is a great artist,.. being compared to that means a huge compliment for anoop,..
URGENT i really want someone to stop these couple of aholes who are writing very very derogetory comments under anoop’s youtube videos they’re so disgusting .they are doing it on purpose to take out their frustration bacouse our anoop is a threat to their favourate.some idiot kids are trying to reason with that person & i just can’t take that drama.could someone please make the poster block those losers?
I think the media took both of those comments too far. Simon looks at stereotypes. He always has. He is CASTING a tv show. Michael Sarver was the blue collar guy…..Simon sometimes calls people by their stereotype. It’s usually about their style, not anything racist.
And Randy was just comparing Anoop to Bobby Brown.
@manu- i know what you mean. i was reading some of the comments and some of them were like HORRIBLE! saying he smelled like curry and stuff much much worse. (by the way who the hell says smells like curry as an insult?????) and im just getting a bit worked up over it.
@manu and @EmilyTaylor.. ive been reading alot of those comments as well.. i am very shocked and saddened.. I cannot believe people can say such things.. but pls remember to keep all our cools down.. WE ARE ANOOP FANS!! AND ANOOP FANS WILL NOT LEVEL OURSELVES TO THOSE IGNORANT, LACKING COMMON-SENSE, PEOPLE who have nothing better to do.. I have message a couple of the account holders in Youtube to take the time to delete the comments.. or report them to youtube.. i hope it will work..
thanks for your effort “snickers1015″.you’re sweet
i’m just wondering what did simon mean by saying to anoop that he is “an overenthusiastic dog” at wildcard night? just wondering…
and why were all the judges pointing at simon and looking weird after anoop sang on wildcard night?
just wondering… if anyone knows? : )
btw i don’t think any of those comments are racist
As much as the comments may not have been meant in a racist way towards Anoop, it’s lovely that it gets people talking about him.
